To serve the public by advancing the art and science of dental hygiene, increasing awareness of and improving access to quality health care; promoting the highest standards of dental hygiene education, licensure, and practice; and representing the profession of dental hygiene.
SFDHA History
Dental Hygiene Oath
In the 1940’s there were 8 dental hygienists that formed the Miami Dental Hygiene Society. It started as a social organization and quickly became a professional organization. These women served as role models in the practice of dental hygiene. They gave a lifetime of selfless dedication to the profession, the society, the community, and each other. This society was the largest in the state of Florida. The founding members were instrumental in setting the directions for other components. We became the East Coast Dental Hygiene Society which served the entire east coast of Florida sometime in the 1950s. In the 70s the boundaries changed as other components in the state were formed. We later incorporated and are now known as the South Florida Dental Hygienists’ Association (SFDHA), a 501c6 organization. This component of the Florida Dental Hygienists’ Association (FDHA) currently serves Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, and Monroe Counties.
In my practice as a dental hygienist, I affirm my personal and professional commitment to improve the oral health of the public, to advance the art and science of dental hygiene, and to promote high standards of quality care.
I pledge continually to improve my professional knowledge and skills, to render a full measure of service to each patient entrusted to my care, and to uphold the highest standards of professional competence and personal conduct in the interest of the dental hygiene profession and the public it serves.
